Available Equipment for People who are Deaf:
One model of TTY and signaler is currently available - Voucher Program
A TTY:
- Is a small typewriter style device that hooks directly into the phone line
- Does not amplify sound
- Does not convert speech to print
- Allows direct calls to other TTY users
- Allows calls to standard phone through a relay service
- Has 3 print sizes that meet most vision needs
ITAC will also provide a lamp signaler to TTY users. The signaler attaches to a lamp in your home. The lamp will flash on and off when the phone rings.
A person who is Deaf with established speech may choose the CapTel phone - Loan Program
The CapTel (captioned telephone) is available through ITAC's Loan Program. The CapTel provides captioning through an operator and relay service. If the amplified phone does not meet your needs, the CapTel phone may work for you.
The CapTel phone is effective for people who:
- Are hard of hearing
- Are late deafened
- Are deaf with established speech
- Use VCO with traditional relay
The CapTel user MUST have excellant speech skills as the operator does not hear that side of the conversation.
